These free to use online Historic Environment Record (HER) allow public access to a redacted version of the full HER held by the councils, while the access to the data is end user licenced not for use for planning, viewing these public portals can help with initial understanding of the potential risks to a site.

National Library of Scotland - click here. A free to use online archive of many years of publication of the Ordnance Survey mapping at various scales for the UK, and is licence for reuse under a Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY Licence.
